Everyone has thoughts, it’s the mental activity which takes place in the mind, day in and day out. These thoughts are actually power seeds. Seeds of greatest or seeds of destruction waiting to manifest in your life. Just as seed time and harvest prevails for the farmer, your ‘thought seeds’ will yield a harvest in your life. Your THOUGHTS will become your words, Words will determine your actions, ACTIONS will form your habits, HABITS will direct your DESTINY. Seed.Time.Harvest. (Galatians 6:7-8) It’s an undeniable process.
The concept of ‘thought seeds’ warrants your consideration. As you are on this journey to uncover purpose in your everyday life, it is imperative to pay attention to your thought life. I once heard someone say, “ being alone in my own head is like being in a dangerous neighborhood”. Can anyone relate? Personally, if I do not place a guard over my thought life, my thoughts can surely run rampant 24/7, and soon lead me down an alley of disappointment, guilt, hurt, pain, regret and failure. Not a place I want to live for sure! What about you, do you struggle with negative thoughts? Do not despair! You can break this vicious cycle!
First, let’s take a moment to discuss why it seems so easy to be ambushed into negative thinking. Each day you are bombarded by the world, (media, internet, movies, TV, Magazines, books, family, friends, strangers, etc.), spilling out a negative or pessimistic attitude. Surrounded by such poisonous gasses, it is easy to lose focus and find yourself thinking and talking negatively about life and more importantly about yourself. It is time to protest against this attack! Be on the offense! God has provided you the seeds of greatness, (His Word), by which you can set up a barricade protecting your mind from the deadly bullets of negative thoughts. “Whatever is true, Whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable; if anything is excellent or praiseworthy; think about such things” (Philippians 4:8). This is a great filter when giving credence to your thoughts. Anything outside these parameters is not going to yield a bountiful harvest. When you purpose to chaperone your thoughts, you position yourself unequivocally to succeed.
Next, it is vitally important to break the cycle of negative self thinking. In order to do this, begin to take inventory of what your negative self-thoughts sound like. “I’m not valuable, my life doesn’t make a difference, I will never overcome this addiction or any other bad habit, I’m too old, too young, too skinny, too fat, too tall, too short, uneducated, overeducated, I’m a failure, I don’t deserve to be loved”, the list goes on and on. Fill in the blanks appropriate for you. Also take note of the ‘patterns’. When do you notice the self destructive voices begin to speak the loudest? When you are tired, overwhelmed, sad, or fearful? Once you are aware of what they sound like and the pattern they usually follow, you can begin to go into combat. You can deliberately silence those voices by refocusing your thoughts. Combat the lies with the truth! Reprogram your thought life to ring the sounds of truth, love, encouragement and motivation these are all great seeds. This will yield the healthy crop you desire in your life (Romans 12:2). God’s word is filled with promises for you to latch hold of and use as ammunition against your negative thoughts. No weapon formed against you, not even your own adverse thoughts, shall prosper (Isaiah 54:17)!
When you decide the past does not dictate your future, your current situation is not the end of your story, and your life is connected to a greater purpose, you will be quick to dismiss negative thoughts and fix your mind on things which will move you forward into your purpose for each day.
Whether you are dealing with a raging battle between your ears everyday or just occasionally, be encouraged…you have the power to fight back. Purpose to redirect your thoughts so your words, actions, and habits will yield the copious destiny you desire. Negative self talk is not profitable. Your life will head in the direction of your thoughts, therefore, choose a calming, nurturing peaceful path (Philippians 6:7).
Do not allow anyone or anything in this world to diminish the authority and power you possess over your thoughts. Learning to control your thoughts is directly connected to uncovering purpose in your everyday life. Don’t allow negative self talk to keep you from your destiny.
