How precious are the moments when you know you are in the right place at the right time, things just seem to be perfect and life makes sense! If only we could experience this everyday. In reality, there are times when things go from bad to worse, and it appears hope is nowhere to be found. What do you do in those moments when life doesn’t make sense?
Perhaps you are in such a season right now. Hold on…there is hope, and there is a purpose for what you are experiencing.
Years ago I went through such a season in my life. It appeared that the anchor to my ship was cut and I was drifting aimlessly in rough waters. Life as I once knew it, no longer made sense. It was in that moment I realized I could go down with the ship or I could begin to search for a way to safe harbors.
Here are seven effective principles to help you persevere when nothing around you is making sense!
- Believe in yourself. Silence all voices which attempt to tell you that you will not make it. Believe you are an overcomer (Romans 8:37).
- Ask for help. Asking for help is not a weakness, it is actually a strength. You do not have to be on this journey alone. Others who are not in the midst of your storm can see things more clearly (Romans 12:15).
- Ask yourself the hard questions. Be willing to come face to face with the things you are responsible for. Denial will keep you lost at sea (1 Corinthians 6:12).
- Be willing to change. Fight against complacency. Be willing to do the hard work to make the necessary changes in order to achieve your desired life. Do not fear change, embrace it (Isaiah 41:10).
- Accept transition. Put things in proper perspective. To get from where you are now to where you want to be, you have to pass through the waves of transition. It’s okay, it’s part of the journey (Isaiah 43:2).
- Be patient. Things take time. Stick to your plan, be confident in the process (2Timothy 4:7).
- Trust. Trust you are not alone. God is with you, He is for you. God will see you through the storm even when you are having difficulty seeing the course ahead (Romans 8:31).
Years ago I couldn’t see the path God had planned for me, nevertheless, I chose to believe it was still there. As I purposed to implement these action steps, I gradually began to see the light leading me safely ashore. Today, I am living proof… you can uncover purpose, even when life seems to make no sense!

Wow Lucy Ann! Once again it’s like you are speaking to me only! I have been sick to my stomach with worry. Did I do the right thing? (It totally seemed like it when I did It) If it’s not, can I fix it? (Or should I?) How do I give comfort and support? (When I’m the one who needs it?) I feel like I have no idea what to do,or what my next step is.
This state of unrest is so hard to sustain. The past 2 years have been a challenge for us. There were so many times I was stunned at what was happening. I always said, “I wonder how this is gonna end up.” And in the end, there were some wonderful things that happened. Don’t get me wrong! It was HARD! But there were also some intense growing opportunities.
So now here I am again. With a knot of anxiety in the pit of my stomach. Did I do the right thing? It seemed so right.
I try to find calmness in reminding myself that I don’t always know the answers, and won’t, until it’s time. I try to find comfort in trusting that there is a plan, God wants the best for me and my family.
Believe…I did the right thing
Trust…I am not alone
Be Patient…The “great” is coming
Accept transition…WAAAAA :’0 ! (Ok, I’m working on that.)
Thank you for your kind and uplifting words!

Carol,
You are so precious! Thanks for sharing your struggles and victories with all of us, what a testimony to walking by faith one day at a time. We are all a work in progress, there is always ‘something’ God is wanting to teach us. I pray God’s peace over you. May you REST in His unfailing love for you and your family. God knows what you do not know, He sees what you can not see…hence we walk by faith and not by sight!
Blessings,
Lucy Ann
